Published Work
In 1984, inspired by the work of Parker Palmer and others, I became involved in conversations about founding a Quaker school in Princeton, New Jersey. Princeton Friends School opened its doors in 1987 with 19 students. In 2001, the Quaker magazine Friends Journal published this article – “Meeting for Learning in a Friends School” – about the Quaker underpinnings of our Princeton Friends. Read it here.
The March 1996 issue of Educational Leadership, a publication of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, included piece I’d submitted upon learning of the death of Dr. Ernest Boyer, an extraordinary educational visionary in the mid-to-late 20th century. His concept of The Basic School, while it doesn’t seem to have retained traction after his passing, remains a powerful model for education at its best. Read it here.
In 2004, the Friends Council on Education published a collection of essays entitled Readings in Quaker Pedagogy. A slightly revised version of my 2001 Friends Journal article was included in this volume along with essays by other Friends school educators. It may be purchased from the Friends Council Bookstore.
In 2014, the Friends Council on Education published another collection of essays entitled Leading in the Light: Celebrating 325 Years of Quaker Education in America, in which was included this article of mine. The entire volume may be purchased from the Friends Council Bookstore.
In 2016, Friends Journal, in an issue dedicated to multiculturalism, published this article describing a long-standing partnership that was launched in the aftermath of 9/11 between Princeton Friends School and Noor-Ul-Iman, an Islamic independent school located in South Brunswick, New Jersey.
